Intro

Kazakh bank 'ForteBank' wanted to surface as the new sheriff in the wild West (Central Asia) as Eurasian Bank had been the dominant bank. After launching their new app allowing customers to send payments, make transfers and even open new accounts, they wanted to launch a peer-to-peer money transfer service similar to Barclays PingIt.

Our first challenge was not having any customer personas or journey maps - without these you’re designing blindly without anything for reference. Consistency also became an issue as the app was initially developed in tables, with no reference to a grid structure.

With user flows created ahead of design and development, there was the caveat that any changes made would not be reflected in the scope of work. Making ad-hoc changes to user flows that usually require some exploration, meant there was a loss in the cross-platform experience.

I began by researching the socio-political and financial landscape of Kazakhstan, but also dug into their family values to sieve out attributes towards personas for their different users - Guest, Potential and Customer. We created a visual lexicon using specific icons and colors to signify different user journeys for more intuitive signposting. To enable trust, we used Kazakh mountain illustrations so users would see a reflection of their cultural references. We finished off with rich engagements using emojis to celebrate instances where users sent or collected money.

We quickly learned that working without user personas, especially for a culture that is alien to your understanding is hazardous. With international clients and partners, it can be very difficult to collaborate and it really pays off to communicate your ideas clearly and directly. It’s important to receive confirmation that all parties are singing from the same hymn sheet - that’s how you avoid expectations or details being misconstrued. To build rapport between teams that live in different time zones, it helps to have as many chemistry meetings and general facetime for a more transparent relationship.
